Membrane Permeability (pH sensor)
Students use a pH sensor to explore which substances can and cannot pass through a cell membrane model.
Supports NGSS Disciplinary Core Idea LS1.AThe cell membrane is represented by a semi-permeable dialysis tubing sac filled with a substance. Students will look for evidence to determine whether starch, iodine, or hydrogen ions are able to pass through the membrane. Students can detect non-visible H+ ion movement by observing changes in pH with a pH sensor, in addition to visible changes when starch and iodine come into contact with one another.
