Product Summary
The Metabolism Chamber is a 250-mL sample bottle with 2 holes cut specifically to allow the simultaneous measurement of carbon dioxide and oxygen gas concentrations with PASCO sensors. Clean in warm soapy water, DO NOT use boiling water, run in hot cycle of dishwasher, or autoclave. Plastic will deform.
One of the most popular methods to explore cellular respiration in the biology lab is to measure the production of carbon dioxide by germinating seeds using a carbon dioxide sensor. The study of cellular respiration becomes richer when students simultaneously obtain carbon dioxide gas data and oxygen gas data.
How It Works
Germinating peas are placed in the Metabolism Chamber at room temperature. Students use PASCO sensors to collect measurements of CO2 gas and O2 gas in the chamber (and possibly temperature as well) over time to see how they vary.
Students should also use non germinating (dry) seeds as a control and can vary the temperature of the seeds (slight heating or chilling) to note the effects on metabolism.
