Product Summary
The Open Speaker, designed for the study of sound wave properties, features a high-quality, 13.3 cm woofer mounted on a sturdy base with standard banana jack inputs. The Open Speaker is designed without a speaker cabinet to reduce the resonance of the air surrounding the rear of the speaker, thus making the Open Speaker perfect for resonance experiments wherein students can clearly hear resonant frequencies.
Features
- 13.3 cm woofer with a polypropylene cone
- High efficiency 10 oz. magnet
- Rugged aluminum brackets that hold the speaker perpendicular to the table
- Standard banana plugs for power input
Applications
- Study wave sound properties including frequency, amplitude, pitch, and wavelength
- Explore the resonance of an air column using resonance tubes

Experiment Library
Perform the following experiments and more with the Open Speaker.
Visit PASCO's Experiment Library to view more activities.
Resonance Air Column
A sine wave generator drives an open speaker to create a standing sound wave in a resonance tube. The driving frequency and the length of the tube are varied to study their relationship to wavelength and the speed of the sound...
Superposition of Sound Waves
Two waves and their sum are created in the Capstone calculator and the effects of changing phases and amplitudes are examined in a graph.
Sound Waves
Explore the characteristics of different sounds, the waves that produce sounds, and the fundamentals of frequency and harmonics within different sounds.
